Scylla used to be a beautiful water nymph, until she was a bitch to Glaucus (Neptune's son), which made the enchantress, Circe, very angry with her. this prompted Circe to create a mysterious mixture of poisonous plants, which she poured into the water where Scylla bathed.
Later on, when Scylla waded out into the water, she had gotten about waist-deep before she noticed that she was surrounded by what seemed to be several giant serpents, and barking monsters. She tried to run away but soon noticed that these horrible things were actually attatched to her.
This situation, as one would expect, left Scylla with a very loathesome temper. Ever since, she's made a habbit out of devouring any hapless sailors that may drift within her reach.
(Greek myth)
--The non-colored version will be posted in my scrapbook, if anyone cares to go take a look at it.--

So cool! I love the dog/wolf heads too. We have a mythology project in my English class and we were each assigned a Greek mythological monster or god, and I got Scylla C:
I don't think I'll be doing the extra credit of dressing up as her, though.

This is great! Not sure why it didn't show up in my devwatch until today ... but! Beside the point. The drawing itself is amazing as always, the coloring spectacular. I always avoid coloring things in Photoshop b/c it's so tedious. Can't imagine how you have the patience, but the result is well worth it. My favorite part is probably the wolf faces and her face, but the water is really cool and frothy as well. All in all... completely impressed :)

Oh yes...tedious is the right word for it. lol! But I've been getting better at it, and I'm able to do it pretty quick now. Plus, like you said, the result is worth all the work involved. I'm glad you like it! :D

Never heard of this story before :) 'tis gooood :)
I think the Scilla cajunattack was reffering to is the one of the two immense rocks that stuck out of the water, and that killed sailors by trapping their ships betewwn them and then crasing them. If i remember correctly, Caribda is the other's name. Scilla and Caribda, if memory serves, gave a hard time to Ulysses and his crew on the way back home.

Yes, that's the one. The myth came about specifically because of that general area where sailors were often killed. I hear there's aparently a whirpool (or at least there was one) around there, too....but I don't know for sure...Whatever, turbulent water, lots of big rocks, not a smart place to have a boat...great setting for sea monsters ;)

This is a great drawing- nice subtle use of water colours- but I thought Scylla was a big rock? Artist license I guess! I'll shut up...

I rock? I've never heard that!...she does live in a cave, though....maybe that's it?
Actually, it's not water-color at all, the drawing is in graphite, and it was painstakingly colored in photoshop. The uncolored version should be right here: [link]
